The topstitching on custom boots does need to be sewn using a machine. But, this isn’t the same as an automatic stitching machine that can sew ten rows of stitches in only a few minutes. The machine has one needle and requires a craftsperson to line up each row of stitches as close as 1/32 of an inch apart. This requires years of practice and expertise. 

Inlay stitching

If you have a pair of cowboy boots or are looking at some to buy, take a closer look at the inlay stitching. Professional boot makers will often use two rows of stitches around the inlaid (or overlaid) design. On well-made custom products, the stitching is extremely close together AND accurate. 

The art of stitching
